Today’s Thought

My father always told me “today’s new is tomorrow’s fish and chip paper”. Not only does this show his age as you’re no longer allowed to use newspaper at the local chippy but it also highlights an age-old problem that I think it becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society.

The longest twitter trend (news related) lasted 16 days 15 hours and 47 minutes and that was regarding the oil spill in May 2010. Considering the gravity of the situation, 16 days is not a long time. Since then, we have had the Chilean mining incident, Gaddafi’s assassination, The Royal Wedding and of course Beyonce’s fake baby bump. None of which even feature on the top ten longest twitter trends.

My question is this, because of the speed at which news and events are now available, are we becoming immune to long term world-events that can ultimately shape society? We feign interest current affairs for a short period of time but ultimately drop the subject like a rag doll, commenting on the next piece of news that has been released. From Steve Job’s passing to the Justin Bieber paternity case, is society addicted to new news rather than showing interest current affairs?
